Solving the Daily Chaos of Menu Building

Canteens are organised chaos. Every day, staff are juggling tight rosters, strict budgets, and endless decisions and the queue of hungry kids looking for a feed! So when Superior Food Services came to Beetle Digital, they asked a clear question: How can we make ordering simpler and for canteen operators?

They had the network, the suppliers, and the reach. What they needed was a tool that could bring everything together in one place, built for everyday use. We said yes. But we didn't just make a catalogue, we created a menu building tool designed to relieve some of the decision making stress facing canteen operators.

A Catalogue That Thinks Like a Canteen

We discovered that canteen operators don't think in product codes or brand silos. They think in stock categories, healthy options, the weekly needs, what's about to run out, and more importantly decoding what students want to eat. So we grouped everything into five practical sections: Frozen, Chilled, Pantry, Beverages, and Packaging. We added the Superior national product codes so any school nationwide can order with confidence through the Superior ordering platform.

The physical format was just as intentional. It needed to be tough. Durable laminate, perfect binding spine and thick enough to survive kitchens, staffrooms, and handbags. We built something that belonged in the daily canteen bench (sauce stains and all), not protected away in a drawer.

A Project That Continues To Grow

More than 50 suppliers collaborated with Superior to appear in the catalogue. But we didn’t list them brand by brand. We focused on function, grouping items by how they’re actually used in a canteen setting. Today, the catalogue is in circulation across Mackay, South East Queensland, and Canberra. And available in digital form, ready for canteens to download. Over the next 12 months, the digital edition will be updated with the idea to include new school product lines and invite more suppliers to collaborate, and we look forward to continuing this project with the amazing Superior Food Services team.
